Today's Verse

By Mark Grant

In Deuteronomy twelve we read, “take care that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, 'How did these nations serve their gods?—that I also may do the same.' You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the LORD hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods. Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. You shall not add to it or take from it.” (Deut. 12:30-32; ESV). The context of Deuteronomy twelve is God’s command to utterly destroy the many pagan sacrificial sites that existed within the Promised Land (verses 1-3). The Canaanites, like many other pagans, had many sacrificial sites because they thought that various gods had power in various places. They believed that if the worshipers of these gods offered acceptable sacrifices, the gods would be forced to do what the worshipers wanted. These horrible practices of human sacrifice and temple prostitution were associated with the worship of Molech and Chemosh. To discourage Israel from adopting the polytheism and immorality of paganism, God commanded Israel to have only one place of sacrifice, the tabernacle. Then in verses 29 through 31 God repeated his intent to destroy the pagan nations occupying Canaan. He commanded Israel not to worship God in the pagans’ way of worship (verse 31). The reason? Because their way of worship included vile and hateful things, such as child sacrifice. Of course, many people believe that mankind has become much more civilized today, and that nothing like this would be practice among our society.

However, our society today has become much more “civilized” and “cultivated” in that young mothers sacrifice their own babies at the alter of Planned Parenthood while it is still in their womb. Videos that have recently been released show workers at Planned Parenthood picking through a baby's body parts in a tray to see if they can find a brain, a liver or a heart to send to a research center because they will get more money for these body parts. Since the legalization of abortion in 1973, over 56 million unborn children have been killed. This is more than the entire population of Spain. That's 155 babies per hour about 1 every 24 seconds. By the time you finish reading this article, over twenty innocent lives will be lost. God’s gift of life for them will be gone forever. Can we remain indifferent to such immense human slaughter? I do not think so. The 42nd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s infamous Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion-on-demand calls to mind the biggest pack of lies ever set in motion – lies that have cost the lives of more than 56 million innocent babies. How can such a slaughter, numerically parallel with 9Hitler's Germany or Stalin’s Russia), be tolerated by the present United States of America, a republic supposedly based on moral values and human rights? So I would like to deal with some of the lies that pro-choice advocates make to try to justify abortion.

LIE # 1. A Human Fetus Is Not A Human Being.
The first thing that pro-choice advocates do is to deny that the fetus is even human. That it is just a blob of tissue and cells. Modern science however, has proven that at the moment of conception or fertilization the organism contains human DNA. Because it is the offspring of human parents, it therefore can only be describe as human life. The bible teaches that "Every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses" (2 Cor. 13:1; ESV). I therefore would like to quote from three different scientists that state, “human life begins at conception.”

1. Dr. Micheline Matthews Roth at Harvard Medical School says, “It is scientifically correct to say that an individual human life begins at conception.”
2. Dr. Alfred Bongiovanni from University of Pennsylvania stated, “I submit that human life is present throughout this entire sequence from conception to adulthood and that any interruption at any point throughout this time constitutes a termination of human life.”
3. Professor Hymie Gordon, Founder of the Mayo Clinic's Genetics program stated, “By all the criteria of modern molecular biology, life is present from the moment of conception.”

Pro-choice advocates not only reject what the word of God says but also reject the scientific truth that “life begins at conception.” While pro-choice advocates reject the word of God I would still like to quote the scriptures for people who still have a respect for God's word. The Psalmist David stated, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well” (Psa. 139:13-14; ESV). “Knit me together”, along with the previous phrase “You formed my inward parts”), suggests the fantastic complexity of the human genetic code. David, even without the resources of modern investigation in the field of genetics, was awestruck as he contemplated the “weaving together” of the human fetus in the womb. What would he have said if he had known what is commonly known today: how the genes of two parents are “knit together” by God’s unseen Hand to produce, every time, an absolutely unique human specimen? When one even begins to consider the complexity and diversity encoded into the DNA of the smallest fetus, from the very moment of conception, this conclusion is irresistible, as David said, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

LIE # 2. It's My Body, It's My Choice.
If a woman is pregnant and says, “It's my body, It's my choice” then this is a very selfish and unloving statement toward her own baby. When a woman becomes pregnant with a child then it is not just her body anymore and the mother gives up her rights and is supposed to protect the child she is carrying. Mother and infant do not develop separately, but together. The mother is the other half of the human nurturing process, a process which begins at conception and which continues for many years after birth. Although a mother and her baby are from the moment of conception structurally separate, they develop to function together as a unit. Donald Winnicott, the English psychologist, has said that, "There is no such thing as a baby, there is a baby and someone." This statement captures the reality of the human baby – a reality which is often overlooked in our society because babies are inaccurately perceived from the moment of birth as separate individuals. Mothers are biologically and genetically designed to nurture their babies. A newborn's mother has everything a baby needs – arms to hold him, breasts with human milk to feed and comfort him, a human body to share with him, a person to protect and be there for him. Even today our society acknowledges that when a mother won't protect her child then there is something wrong. States have begun to pass laws to convict mothers who endanger their babies by taking drugs during their pregnancy. A Tennessee woman is the first to be charged under a new state law that specifically makes it a crime to take drugs while she is pregnant, calling it "assault." A woman who was twenty six, was arrested just recently after both she and her newborn infant tested positive for meth. The young woman is the first person in the state to be prosecuted for the offense. The law, which just went into effect earlier this year, allows a woman to be "prosecuted for assault for the illegal use of a narcotic drug while pregnant" if her infant is harmed or addicted to the drug. In Alabama the “chemical endangerment law” has became the most sweeping measure deployed against pregnant women in the U.S. A woman can be charged with chemical endangerment from the earliest weeks of pregnancy, even if her baby is born perfectly healthy, and even if her goal was to protect her baby from greater harm. The penalties are exceptionally stiff: One to 10 years in prison if her baby suffers no ill effects, 10 to 20 years if her baby shows signs of exposure or harm and 10 to 99 years if her baby dies. Even our state laws are starting to recognize that a mother is supposedly to love and care for her child and do anything to protect her baby from harm. In 1 Kings chapter three we read, “Then two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. The one woman said, "Oh, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth to a child while she was in the house. Then on the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth. And we were alone. There was no one else with us in the house; only we two were in the house. And this woman's son died in the night, because she lay on him. And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me, while your servant slept, and laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast. When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, he was dead. But when I looked at him closely in the morning, behold, he was not the child that I had borne." But the other woman said, "No, the living child is mine, and the dead child is yours." The first said, "No, the dead child is yours, and the living child is mine." Thus they spoke before the king. Then the king said, "The one says, 'This is my son that is alive, and your son is dead'; and the other says, 'No; but your son is dead, and my son is the living one." And the king said, "Bring me a sword." So a sword was brought before the king. And the king said, "Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other." Then the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because her heart yearned for her son, "Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means put him to death." But the other said, "He shall be neither mine nor yours; divide him." Then the king answered and said, "Give the living child to the first woman, and by no means put him to death; she is his mother" (1 Kings 3:16-27; ESV). How did Solomon know who was the real mother? Was it not the one who wanted to protect her child and not kill it?

LIE # 3. Planned Parenthood Provides Health Care For Woman.
Did you know that the founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, was a devout racist who created the Negro Project designed to sterilize unknowing black women and others she deemed as undesirables of society? The founder of Planned Parenthood said, "Colored people are like human weeds and are to be exterminated." Is her vision being fulfilled today? Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in America. 78% of their clinics are in minority communities. Blacks make up 12% of the population, but 35% of the abortions in America. Why is it that black people are the only minority in America that is on the decline in population? Margaret Sanger wrote a letter to Dr. Clarence Gamble on December 19th, 1939 in which she stated, “We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population. And the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members” (Sophia Smith collection, Smith College, North Hampton, Massachusetts).

Margaret Sanger was invited to speak at a number of KKK rallies about her Eugenic sterilization to which she accepted. “"I accepted an invitation to talk to the women's branch of the Ku Klux Klan...I saw through the door dim figures parading with banners and illuminated crosses...I was escorted to the platform, was introduced, and began to speak...In the end, through simple illustrations I believed I had accomplished my purpose. A dozen invitations to speak to similar groups were proffered" (Margaret Sanger: An Autobiography, P.366).

Despite Planned Parenthood’s best efforts to convince the public otherwise, their organization is not a trusted friend for women and young girls. Much to the contrary, Planned Parenthood is a business—wholly focused on revenue from abortion—not helping women. Margaret Sanger declared, “The most merciful thing that a family does to one of its infant members is to kill it” The Woman Rebel, Volume I, Number 1. Reprinted in Woman and the New Race. New York: Brentanos Publishers, 1922). From its own figures in 2007, prenatal and adoption services amounted to approximately 5 percent of Planned Parenthood’s business, while abortions made up the other 95 percent.

Also, Planned Parenthood offers no mammograms for women. Former Planned Parenthood director Abby Johnson said, “that although pro-abortion advocates are claiming that if Congress de-funds Planned Parenthood women would lose access to life-saving care, this is definitely not the case since their facilities are only level-one breast cancer service centers. This means that all they can provide is referrals for mammograms and conduct manual breast exams.” Johnson explained, “Having worked at a Planned Parenthood, I knew that there are no Planned Parenthood’s licensed to have mammogram machines. They can provide a referral for a mammogram, but any health provider can refer a woman for a mammogram.” She added, “We know they won’t do mammograms, but they won’t come out and make a statement. They perpetuate this lie by their silence.”

Yes, Planned Parenthood entices with flattery and fair speech; with a bait they draw the unwary young women to the hook.. But they are mistaken if they think that by bringing others to partake with them in their guilt, and to be bound, as it were, in the bond with them, they will not be held accountable by God, for they will have so much the more to answer for. It was Solomon who warned his son about people who want to shed innocent blood in order to make money. “My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. If they say, "Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without reason; like Sheol let us swallow them alive, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we shall find all precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder; throw in your lot among us; we will all have one purse"—my son, do not walk in the way with them; hold back your foot from their paths, for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. For in vain is a net spread in the sight of any bird, but these men lie in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives. Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain; it takes away the life of its possessors” (Prov. 1:10-19; ESV).

LIE # 4. Abortion Is Needed In Case Of Rape Or Incest.
Rape cases and incest in the United States make up only one third of one percent. So 99.67 % of abortions that take place have nothing to do with rape or incest. This shows that pro-choice people use this argument in order to deceive, as if rape and incest make up a large number of abortions when they clearly do not. Why is it that our society wants to punish the baby by ending its life and do nothing to the man that raped or committed incest? It is God who teaches in his word that no one should be responsible for the crimes of others. "Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin” (Deut. 24:16). Furthermore, the anguish and psychic suffering caused by rape and incest has been treated quite effectively. Professor Stephen Krason points out that…"psychological studies have shown that, when given the proper support, most pregnant rape victims progressively change their attitudes about their unborn child from something repulsive to someone who is innocent and uniquely worthwhile." (Stephen M. Krason, Abortion: Politics, Morality, and the Constitution (Lanham, MD: University Press of America, 1984), p. 284). Some pro-choice advocates claim that the Christian lacks compassion, since the Christian's position on rape and incest forces a woman to carry her baby against her will. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is the rapist who has already forced this woman to carry a child, not the Christian. The Christian merely wants to prevent another innocent human being (the unborn Child) from being the victim of a violent and morally reprehensible act (abortion), for two wrongs do not make a right. The Christian believes that help should be given to the rape victim to make it as easy as possible for her to give up her baby for adoption, if she desires. Adoption is the kind, loving choice for everyone involved. Dealing with the woman pregnant from rape, then, can be an opportunity for herself and the awaiting parents to develop true understanding of how important and precious life really is. Is it not better to try to develop these virtues than to endorse a system of taking an innocent life as the solution?

In conclusion, unborn children are innocent and should be protected instead of being torn apart and their lives being abruptly ended. In the law of Moses it was God who gave a law in order to protect the rights of a pregnant wife and her unborn child because both are seen as equal in value. "When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman's husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe” (Exo. 21:22-23; ESV). The text is interpreted to mean, if a woman is accidentally struck when two men are fighting and she gives birth prematurely but no injury is sustained by either her or her baby, then the courts shall fine the man who injured the woman and payment shall be made to the husband. But if either the woman or the baby is injured or killed, the law of eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, and life for life would be enforced. It is sad to see that our once great nation that had respect for human life has fallen because life in America has become cheap. It is God however who teaches us that human life is not cheap because man was made in the image of God. In Genesis 9:6 we read, "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image” (ESV). Since we are created in God's image a high value is attached to the life of every person, even the poorest and humblest, or even a baby in it's mother's womb. It is my prayer and hope that we have a spiritual awakening in this country and people turn back to God and his word and get back “to a thus saith the Lord,” lest we watch this country sink into the spiritual and moral abyss of a New Dark Age of chosen ignorance.
